Proxomitron

The Proxomitron is a web browser proxy server that features a powerful HTML text matching engine that is able to dynamically filter and alter web pages on the fly. It works with any browser to eliminate cyber-spam like pop-up windows, alerts, banners, auto-play music, sounds, dynamic HTML, Flash animations, Java and more. You can replace background images with your own, rewrite JavaScripts, even filter normally hidden HTTP header messages. The program comes with over 50 filters included, and equally powerful filters can be created or added.

When Proxomitron installs, it does not start automatically at system boot, so you'll want to add it to the startup group or run it manually. In a nutshell, Proxomitron talks to the internet for you and hides the information you want to keep private. Proxomitron listens on your internal port 8080, so you need to tell your browser to use proxy server 127.0.0.1 on port 8080.

If you want to install Proxomitron first and then test results, simply right click on the programs task bar icon and choose bypass. Visit the AuditMyPC.com privacy page and record the information that is displayed. Right click on the program icon again, and, then right click on the programs icons again and click on bypass to turn it back on. Now visit the privacy page again and compare the results.

Pidgin 2.5.7 fixed in yahoo problems

By June 21, 2009, it’s no great secret that Yahoo has decided to break clients that use outdated authentication code. The result of that change is that Pidgin 2.5.6 and older no longer work unless you connect to one of a very few servers left that still speak the old authentication mechanism. We knew this change was upcoming, but all indications we saw pointed to us having almost another two months to push a release with updated authentication code. Pidgin is an easy to use and free chat client used by millions. Connect to AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and more chat networks all at once. Supported chat networks: AIM Bonjour Gadu-Gadu Google Talk Groupwise ICQ IRC MSN MySpaceIM QQ SILC SIMPLE Sametime XMPP Yahoo! All that aside, we’ve had some updated authentication code for a while now, and were originally waiting to include it in the Pidgin 2.6.0 release. However, since Yahoo made the authentication changes earlier than we expected, we had to react as quickly as possible to stop the flow of incoming complaints. As a result, we backported the Yahoo authentication changes so we could cut a Pidgin 2.5.7 release fairly quickly.

Pidgin 2.5.7 is now released and does work to connect to Yahoo.

Just for the record, I’d also like to point out to those who complained about waiting three days to get a working release that the last time Yahoo screwed with authentication, it took over a week to even get code to fix the problem, let alone prepare a release and actually get it out to users.

Additionally, we fixed the annoying MSN disconnect-on-block issue and changed AIM’s behavior such that the “could not retrieve your buddy list” error appears only once per AIM account.

Without Anonymization, every computer in the internet communicates using a traceable Address. That means:

the website visited,
the internet service provider (ISP),
and any eavesdropper on the internet connection

can determine which websites the user of a specific computer visits. Even the information which the user calls up can be intercepted and seen if encryption is not used. JAP uses a single static address which is shared by many JAP users. That way neither the visited website, nor an eavesdropper can determine which user visited which website.

How it works

Instead of connecting directly to a webserver, users take a detour, connecting with encryption through several intermediaries, so-called Mixes. JAP uses a predetermined sequence for the mixes. Such a sequence of linked mixes is called a Mix Cascade. Users can choose between different mix cascades.

Since many users use these intermediaries at the same time, the internet connection of any one single user is hidden among the connections of all the other users. No one, not anyone from outside, not any of the other users, not even the provider of the intermediary service can determine which connection belongs to which user. A relationship between a connection and its user could only be determined if all intermediaries worked together to sabotage the anonymization.

The intermediaries (mix providers) are generally provided by independent institutions which officially declare, that they do not keep connection log files or exchange such data with other mix providers. JAP shows the identity and number of organisations in each Mix cascade in detail, and verifies this information by cryptographic means. The users are thus able to selectively choose trustable mix cascades. independent watchdogs, who work in the name of the JAP users, will insure that the mix providers hold to their official declarations.

Vidalia is a packaged application that includes Tor, the Privoxy local proxy as well as the Vidalia GUI for managing the Tor experience. With the one Vidalia download, you end up with a local Privoxy proxy loaded on your local PC with an instance of Tor to connect through for privacy.

Displays Status of the Tor software

Vidalia runs in your system’s notification area, changing its icon to indicate the status of the Tor software. You will know at a glance if the Tor software is working or not without taking up a lot of screen real estate.
